Recommendations

Here are some of the greatest slash stories I have ever found. They span several fandoms, including, strangely enough, due South and Star Wars: Epsiode I, which I almost never read. What can I say? They were good stories! Yay! I checked and fixed links again (9-15-03). Let me know if something breaks. :)

Star Trek: Voyager

Sweet Dreams --- Margaret Berger --- C/P --- This is the first slash story I ever read, and it is still one of my favorites. It's long but good. The tricky pairing of Chakotay and Paris is handled with a deftness that makes it look easy, and it's all just incredibly sweet.

Consanguinity --- Amirin --- P/K --- Amirin is an AWESOME author, and I love practically everything she's written, but this series... it just knocks your socks off. Harry as a vampire... need I say more? The next two parts are Exsanguination, and Sanguinary. It's not finished, but what's there is worth it.

The Sentinel

Everything's Jake --- Alyjude --- J/B --- Aly is possibly the best Sentinel author out there, in my opinion. And this story is one of her best. I love it when stories bring out Blair's fatherly instincts, and the kid in this one is just adorable, and not in a squicky, annoying way. Watch out, it's really long, but it will leave you begging for more... and there is more! Two sequels so far, and another one in zine format.

Hunger --- Kim Gasper --- J/B --- I tried to avoid recommending things that other people had already recommended, but it is impossible to make a Sentinel recommendations page without mentioning this PWP. This is one of the hottest stories you'll every read, I guarantee it. Go, read, now!

Sweet Memory --- sasquatch --- J/B --- This story grabbed me and wouldn't let go... as I was writing this rec page, it kept running through my mind, so I finally dropped everything and went on a huge quest to track it down... which finally ended when my friend Anita managed to remember the title and author. This is sort of an AU story in which Jim and Blair meet and fall in love when Jim is still in the Army and Blair is only seventeen. It's long and sweet and angsty, and it even manages to fit in seamlessly with canon.

Magick --- Kim Gasper --- J/B --- Another Kim Gasper story. This one is incredible long, around 800 K, total, but it is so worth it. Stinging angst, some major character torture, but man, she does it so well. This is one of those stories where you feel everything right along with the characters, so don't read it if you're feeling fragile.

Unsleeping --- Martha --- gen --- This is another creepy story, and no, I do not have an unhealthy obsession with demonic rituals, really, I don't. I'm just a fan of scary stories. This is a great one, too. Plus, it's not only scary, but it plays with the canon idea of Blair's shamanism in a very, very cool way. This story is gen but it does contain some nice J/B cuddling, and is so fast-paced, there's no room for slash in it anyway. A great, thrilling read.

By the Book --- Lanning Cook --- J/B --- As they say, and now for something compeletly different. This little gem is a beautiful, light-hearted, hot PWP from an author who can write the guy's voices so well it's just awe-inspiring.

Harbor of My Heart --- Romslinger --- J/B --- This AU reverses the usual cliche of Jim saving Blair from a life on the streets, and does it in a very touching, believable way. Too many times in AU's the author takes for granted the fact that Jim and Blair will have a relationship, and neglects to properly develop their bond. Not so here. Everything in this story comes together, smooth as silk.

Shadows and Light --- Mairead Triste and Aristide --- J/B --- This is a fascinating look at a conflicted Jim struggling to cope with his relationship with Blair. Very cool. Nice character moments. Hot sex scenes. What more could you want?

Cold Sweat --- Pares --- J/B --- Cold Sweat is the first story in a very nice series, but really, read everything this author ever wrote, because she is awesome. Here's a link to her Sentinel stories. Go. Read. I love the way she writes Jim and Blair. They sound and act just like they do on TV. It's truly amazing.

Nothing On --- Francesca --- J/B --- Everyone recs Francesca's Nature Series, which is great and deserves the recs... but I really loved this story which is NOT part of that series. It's a believable, hot, in character first-time, with the guys really acting like guys, which I always appreciate in a slash story.

Revelations --- Josephine Darcy --- J/B --- A cool story that contains one of the funnier lines I've seen in a slash story, "Of course, El Nino being what it was, global climate changes and all, who knew what sort of chances a snowball might currently have in Hell?"

Groundswell --- Laura M. Kaye --- J/B --- A nice, short little story about Blair being there for Jim. Preslash, but it leaves you warm and fuzzy inside.

Equilibrium --- Destina Fortunato --- J/B --- A nice theraputic story for anyone who’s watched the fourth season a little too much lately. Basically, this story convinces you that everything really can be all right, and does so in a nice, subtle, angst-free way that just makes you go "Awwwww!" Which is something I personally really enjoy.

PWP --- Jen Riddler --- J/B --- The title says it all. This little story makes you respect the plotless genre.

Six Moments in Time --- Pink Dragon --- J/B --- This is a really new story, but it was absolutely lovely. it’s just what the title says. Six moments in time. It’s a first-kiss-on-a-camping-trip story. I just love those.

An Unexamined Life --- Helen --- J/B --- Um. I like this story. It starts with a sort of casual J/m thing, which for some reason, I really like in a story. But the best part of this story is just how well it builds towards Jim and Blair’s relationship as they both come to the realization that maybe they’re not as straight as they thought they were. And it’s much less angsty than Shadow and Light. Although not entirely without angst. Just enough for flavoring. :-)

Tender --- Resonant --- J/B --- A lovely little first time story. This has an absolutely gorgeous first kiss. That kiss alone is totally worth the price of admission. Plus the section at the beginning when Blair calls the police academy fun.

Tree of Knowledge --- Afropuff --- J/B --- I like the character interaction in this one. I think Jim and Blair are very in-character. This is another gentle Jim-and-Blair-get-together story. It’s nice, romantic, warm and fuzzy. What more could you want?

Heaven Is A Place On Earth --- Dolimir and Veronica --- J/B --- This story made me go ’Oh yeah, this is why I like slash...’ Yeah. It's good.

Happily Ever After --- Merri-Todd Webster --- J/B --- Beautiful is the first word that comes to mind after you read this one. You can feel the love Jim has for Blair, and it leaves you with a bittersweet smile, and maybe a tear in your eye. It is a death story, but not the kind that tears your heart out. Like Jim, you come away from this story with a feeling of peace and happiness, and a sense that they will always love each other. I don't like death stories in general, but, like anything, it is a genre that can be done well. And this story does it so well.

Fifty-One --- Lullenny --- J/B --- Another new story. This one is a very nice depiction of Jim and Blair fifteen years down the line. Sweet romance, forever love type stuff, along with lovely, in-character humor and affection.

Never Goin' Anywhere --- Pink Dragon --- J/B --- For me, this is the ultimate slash story. A slow, gentle progression from friends to lovers that just makes you melt. I love this one.

Quarry --- Cara Chapel --- J/B --- This story is like an episode (a really good episode), with slash and sex. Actually, if there were ever a Sentinel movie, this is totally my nomination for the plot for it. It's just awesome. I love the Blair in this story. He is tough, smart, and confident, everything I love about Blair, and hate to not see in a story.

Dorset County Series --- Dasha --- J/B --- (Starts with 'I Still Believe') A long lingering tale of Jim and Blair's life after Jim's senses force him to leave the big city or die. I can't express enough how much I love this series. I think Dasha is very in touch with the characters, and looks at an interesting angle of the Sentinel-Guide thing, which is Blair's own anxiety that he'll screw up and Jim will be hurt because of it. In fact, a large part of the overall story arc is about Blair's efforts to overcome this fear. (And yet, it does not make Blair annoying or weak). I love the simple, everyday tone of this story, the depth and permanence of Jim and Blair's love, and the running cast of interesting original characters.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Paving Stones Series --- Wolfling and Mad Poetess --- Giles/Spike --- So good. Spike and Giles lean on each other after Buffy's death at the end of the fifth season. Beautiful writing, powerful emotions, perfectly in character voices. This has the distinction of being the first Buffy story I’ve found that grabbed me enough for me to read all the way through. Links to the individual parts: 1 2 3 4

Blueberry Syrup Is A Crime Against Nature, And By The Way, Thanks For Saving The World --- Maddog --- Gen --- Giles and Xander talk after the Season Six finale. I absolutely love the bit at the end where they’re, um, not complaining.

Autumnal Equinox --- A. Manley Haight --- Het! Buffy/Giles --- This is one of the hottest things I've read in a long time. Whew. Plus, it managed to convince me of the very tricky pairing of Buffy and Giles, which says very good things about the talent of this author. Plus, she used to write slash, and it shows in her sex scenes. ;-) I especially liked the phone sex scene near the beginning.

Warlock --- Lesley Turner --- Het! Giles/Jenny --- An awesome story, with a sweet, believable, moving romance at the heart of it. Plus, Giles casts some serious magicks, and he is so hot when he does that... The link takes you to her page at Of Demons and Destiny, because one of the links in the story itself (I think part six) is broken.

Sidelines --- Anna S. --- Spike/Xander --- Not a pairing I often read, but Anna does it so well. This is a rewrite of the fourth season where Xander rather than Willow turns out to be the gay one, and as an AU, it just makes perfect sense.

Essential Fragility --- K. V. Wylie --- Buffy/Giles/Willow --- Yup. You read the pairing right... Ok, it sounds weird, but this is a beautiful, touching story. As the sole Sunnydale survivors of the fallout of the Mayor's Ascension gone terribly wrong, Giles, Buffy, and Willow pick up the peices of their lives. And the best part is, unlike many of the apocalypse type stories, this one ends on a note of real hope. The tone of the story shifts beautifully from dark to light, very subtly and deftly.

Twilight's Last Gleaming --- Laura Shapiro --- Het! Giles/Joyce --- Yes! A good Giles/Joyce story!! I knew that such a thing had to exist somewhere!! My only complaint is it's too short.

Brass --- Te --- Ethan/Giles/Spike --- Young Ripper and Ethan play with fire... in the form of a vampire named Spike. Yummy.

Thanks --- Nonie Rider --- Giles/Spike (also refers to Ethan/Giles) --- More believable Giles/Spike. Always a good thing. This story is a brief encounter set late in season five.

All Work And No Play --- Sarah T. --- Ethan/Giles --- God, this is funny. Giles and Ethan, bored, playing a special version of scrabble, and traumatizing Xander for life.

Never Entirely Free --- K. V. Wylie --- Ethan/Giles --- Dark and moody and freaky and cool. This story gives a frightening meaning to Ethan's line about the Scoobies not knowing what Giles is capable of, and it captures the strange dynamic Ethan and Giles seem to have.

Winners --- waxjism --- Het! Buffy/Xander --- The pairing's not the point of the story, though. This one's great. Read!

#91 --- Meagan --- Giles/Xander --- Ok, I just finished watching Becoming, which came across to me, dirty-minded slasher I am, as very Xander/Giles-y. However, this story is not actually set after Becoming. But it is good Xander/Giles, so that made me happy. Hopefully, it will make you, dear reader, happy too.

Distractions --- Sheila --- Het! Giles/Jenny --- Sweet, funny, and very cute. Jenny takes Giles to a professional wrestling match and enjoys waching him squirm, as we know she does. So in character, it could have been lifted straight from the show itself.

Three Words --- Andraste --- Ethan/Giles --- A conversation between Giles and Ethan (during which Ethan has Giles tied to his bed...) that touches on the many facets of their relationship. A nice little read.

I'm My Own Grandsire --- Ash --- Um... --- This is just too funny...

Alternity --- Blair Provence --- Het! Buffy/Giles --- A bittersweet story set in an alternate universe that splits off after the third season. Buffy and Giles are on the run from assassins sent by the Watcher's council, living in Houston, getting by on activities that would be illegal, if the US government made laws regarding the use of magic, and picking the pockets of vampires... Angsty, but there's love.

Cream --- Dawn, Sharon, and Te --- Giles/Xander --- Such an unrepentant PWP it actually makes the pairing believable without even trying. Plus, the character interaction is spot on and the writing is poetic and beautiful.

Devine Possession --- The Spike --- Ethan/Xander (mention of Ethan/Giles and Giles/Xander) --- Ethan gets ahold of Xander and offers him something he needs. Eveyone's in character, wonderful Xander-voice, the situation is believable, and I just totally bought this story. Plus, it has a great sequel, written by Debchan, Sacrament: Initiation Rites.

Once More, All Naked, All Gay --- Dumbsaint --- Many (includes het and femslash) --- A rewrite of the musical episode... with a twist. Not only is everyone singing, they are also mostly nude and gay. It's funny, it really is. :)

Empty Graves and Absent Friends 1 2 3 --- H. Nonny Nonny --- Larry/Xander --- Larry is summoned from the Wishverse. This story is so well written. Incredible emotional resonance. The end is really painful, but that is a testament to how good the author is. Actually, the end of this story made me sad in another way... thinking that if they wanted to end the actual show with a heartrending victory, this is how they should have done it. Warning: People die.

Candyass --- RealMitzvah --- Giles/Xander --- During Band Candy, Ripper dumps Joyce and sets his sights on different prey: Xander. Cool story. Very cool story.

Til It Bleeds Daylight --- Sarah T. --- Giles/Oz --- Set in the Wishverse, one of the only Giles/Oz stories I actually buy... boy, it's great, too. But then, it's Sarah T. so really, who would expect anything less?

Wedding Belles --- Katyd --- Het! Buffy/Giles --- Really the ultimate Buffy/Giles green-card wedding story. So sweet, so in character, just a beautiful little story that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. There's a wonderful, slow build up to the romantic relationship, a nice elevation of physical intimacy and love throughout... and just countless little moments that make you laugh out loud. And I just LOVE the vampire bunny...

Proof --- Elaine McMillan --- Het! Giles/Jenny --- So cute!!! And there's just not enough Giles/Jenny stuff out there.

Flaming Sticks --- Serendipity --- Um. None... Really... --- Funny little parody story... yeah, the characters talk to the author, the author talks back, people wander in and out randomly, and Jenny continually protests that she's dead... it's fun.

The Letters Home Series --- David and Monique --- Het! Giles/Willow --- Such a classic romance. Very sweet, very believable. A joy to read, really.

Excelsior --- Saone --- Xander/Andrew --- Ok, ok, trying to think of something to say beyond just gleefully squealing 'Xandrew!!!'. Well. I got nothing. It's not that it's not worthy of further comment, it's just that it's so very them that there is really nothing more that needs to be said...

The Dirt and Dust of Countless Ages --- Jen --- Xander/Andrew --- Wow. There was not a whole lot of Xander canon to work with in season seven, and yet, I think this captures him perfectly, probably even better than the show did. One of the many things I absolutely *adored* about this story was Xander's maturity. He is an adult, clearly, but still Xander. It is the kind of characterization we *wish* the show had given us. I also loved the slow development of the love between Xander and Andrew, here. Nothing was left out or taken for granted. Issues that needed to be dealt with were dealt with... Xander's lingering feelings for Anya, the constant gloom and stress of season seven, and, of course, Xander's gradual realization and acceptance of the fact that he's attracted to a man.

Inheritances --- Kita --- Angel(us), Spike, and Giles, and all combinations thereof --- Painful story, fills in the missing pieces of Giles's torture at the hands of Angelus. This one gets it right.

Bulletproof --- Doyle --- None --- Andrew in the Wishverse, some kind of hero. Just... perfect...

Behind the Scenes at Shipper Central --- Cyberwulf --- Many --- Spike and Giles rant about various pairings. Very fun.

The Career Change Series --- Two Ladies of Quality --- Spike/Giles (with an option on others) --- Of all the VampGiles stories I've read... well, it doesn't even seem right to shove this story into a narrow category like that. It's an utterly fascinating read. There's so much going on in this story: the events of season five play out, although they are influenced strongly by the changed cricumstances; the web of relationships between the characters in intricate and believable; characters retain their canonical flaws and quirks; the attitude and humor of the stories are completely true to the show. A sequel is reportedly in the works.

The This Will Be Our Year Series 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 and Little Savage 1&2 3 4 5 6 7 --- gwynnega --- Giles/Willow --- I love Giles/Willow in canon. It's an adorable, obvious pairing. And yet, no one really seems to write it... at least, not many people. And it's done right even less. But these stories... I cannot stress enough how perfect they are. Spot on characterisations, that capture both the cute, innocent, booky, side of Willow and Giles as well as their dark sides, and does both of these things at the same time. Little Savage is especially impressive, as it integrates the relationship into the events of an AU second season, and it does it flawlessly. The major events of the season are kept mostly the same, but their impact on Willow and Giles and, in turn, the impact of Willow and Giles's involvement on those events is so smooth and well done it staggers me.

Tell The End --- Te --- Angel/Xander --- All I can say about this story is: Whoa.

The Scapegoat --- KindKit --- Giles/Andrew --- Ok, first of all... Giles/Andrew. It's so wrong it's right. And this... this story does that wrong just right.

Transistion --- Wyvern --- Giles/Xander --- And speaking of doing wrong things right... this is another take on Vamp!Giles. And it is fascinating and original, and made me go, oh... yeah, of course that's what he'd be like. Plus, it's Xander/Giles! Yay!

Miscellaneous

A Stolen Moment --- K9 --- Jurassic Park III --- A/B --- Sweet, hot, and soooo in character. This is my very favorite JP3 story, and that's saying a lot, cause I pretty much love 'em all! If you’ve seen the movie, give this story a chance. You won’t regret it. In fact, I'm just going to go ahead a recommend the whole fandom. The archive can be found here.

One Man's Kink --- Mallory Klohn --- due South --- F/V --- I love this story. I've never seen the show, I've barely read any of the fanfic, but I just love this story. There's a moment in it that's just... perfect. Read it, and you'll understand what I'm rambling about.

Tease --- Elfin --- Star Wars: Episode One --- Q/O --- This is another story I'm totally unqualified to recommend. I never read Star Wars stories, but I like this author (she writes JPIII), so I gave this story a try. It's awesome!
